Why it ranks here

Produced entirely by Ant of Atmosphere, Shadows on the Sun introduced Ali's booming voice, wit and candor about his albinism, faith and family. It received near-unanimous acclaim: Pitchfork gave it 8.7, HipHopDX 5 out of 5, RapReviews 9 and The Village Voice an A-minus. Ant's soul-heavy beats give it a warmth that his later records built on.

Context

Released May 2, 2003 on Rhymesayers Entertainment, three years after his cassette-only debut.

Highlights

  • Room With a View
  • Champion
  • Star Quality
  • Forest Whitiker
  • Picket Fence

Weak Spots

  • Eighteen tracks run long
  • A few battle-rap cuts feel dated

Production

Ant

Influence

Made him one of Rhymesayers' flagship artists; "Forest Whitiker" is still one of his best-known songs.

Replay Value

Very high.

Why it ranks here

Again produced entirely by Ant, The Undisputed Truth pairs personal songs, including "Faheem" and "Walking Away", with "Uncle Sam Goddamn", a pointed critique of the US government. Reviews were more divided than for Shadows (Pitchfork 6.6, RapReviews 9), but it is the album most fans name alongside it.

Context

Released April 10, 2007 on Rhymesayers; it debuted at No. 69 on the Billboard 200 with about 11,000 copies sold in its first week.

Highlights

  • Truth Is
  • Uncle Sam Goddamn
  • Take Me Home
  • Faheem
  • Walking Away

Weak Spots

  • Ant's production is more polished and less surprising
  • A slight sag in the second half

Production

Ant

Influence

Verizon withdrew its sponsorship of his 2007 tour over the "Uncle Sam Goddamn" video, and he performed the song on The Late Late Show. "Whatcha Got" appeared in Madden 08.

Replay Value

High — it rewards repeat listens.

Why it ranks here

Us turns outward, telling other people's stories as much as his own, again over Ant's production throughout. It holds a Metacritic score of 83, PopMatters gave it 10 out of 10, Pitchfork 7.8, and The A.V. Club placed it ninth among its top albums of 2009. It is warmer and more generous than the two albums before it.

Context

Released September 22, 2009 on Rhymesayers; it reached No. 56 on the Billboard 200.

Highlights

  • The Preacher
  • Fresh Air
  • House Keys
  • Tight Rope
  • Breakin' Dawn

Weak Spots

  • Sixteen tracks is a lot
  • Less raw energy than Shadows

Production

Ant

Influence

His best critical consensus and the end of his first Ant era.

Replay Value

High — it rewards repeat listens.

Why it ranks here

His first album since his self-produced debut not made with Ant was produced entirely by Jake One and features Cornel West. It is his most direct political statement, about poverty, foreclosure and American power, balanced by personal songs about faith. It holds a Metacritic score of 80, with Pitchfork giving it 7.9, though Consequence of Sound was less impressed.

Context

Released September 18, 2012 on Rhymesayers; it reached No. 44 on the Billboard 200, his highest chart position. That year he was arrested with dozens of others during a Minneapolis foreclosure protest.

Highlights

  • Mourning in America
  • Only Life I Know
  • Letter to My Countrymen
  • Stop the Press
  • Work Everyday

Weak Spots

  • Preachy in stretches
  • Jake One's production is cleaner than Ant's

Production

Jake One

Influence

His peak commercially and a reference point for activist rap of the early 2010s.

Replay Value

High — it rewards repeat listens.

Why it ranks here

Five years after Mourning in America, Ali reunited with Ant for a calmer, more spiritual album recorded at Stophouse Studios in Minneapolis, with guests including Amir Sulaiman and Dem Atlas. It holds a Metacritic score of 80, and Exclaim! said the long wait was worth it, but it lacks the bite of his 2000s records.

Context

Released May 5, 2017 on Rhymesayers; it peaked at No. 125 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on Independent Albums.

Highlights

  • Own Light (What Hearts Are For)
  • Dear Black Son
  • Pen to Paper
  • Never Learn
  • Before They Called You White

Weak Spots

  • Over an hour long
  • Its calm tone can drift

Production

Ant

Influence

Restored the Ali and Ant partnership, which returned again in 2025.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Produced entirely by Ant, Satisfied Soul has seventeen tracks with no guest rappers, though several musicians add live instrumentation. RapReviews gave it 8.5 and argued his strongest work comes from the Ant partnership, and Cult MTL praised how he revisits his past with maturity. It is steady rather than revelatory.

Context

Released February 14, 2025, his first album for Mello Music Group, after the Satisfied Soul EP of November 2024.

Highlights

  • Satisfied Soul
  • Deep Cuts
  • Higher Learning at the Skyway
  • Head Heart Hands
  • Sing Myself Whole

Weak Spots

  • Nearly an hour long
  • Few moments match his early peaks

Production

Ant

Influence

Too recent to judge.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Produced entirely by Evidence, Secrets & Escapes is a 33-minute set with Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli and Evidence as guests. AllMusic's Thom Jurek praised its unpolished energy and its themes of faith, family and self-criticism. It is enjoyable but feels like a side project next to the Ant albums.

Context

Released November 1, 2019 on Rhymesayers, his last album for the label.

Highlights

  • Situated
  • Father Figures
  • Greatest That Never Lived
  • De La Kufi
  • They Shot Ricky

Weak Spots

  • Feels slight
  • Evidence's loops can sound generic

Production

Evidence

Influence

A minor entry, though it showed his voice works over sparser boom-bap.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Produced entirely by unJUST of the Hieroglyphics circle, Love & Service builds its beats from samples of 1970s and 1980s educational children's programming, played on an ASR-10 sampler. RapReviews noted that it continues his established format and singled out the opener "Chapter 1". The concept is more interesting than the songs.

Context

Released April 26, 2024 on Travelers Media after a run of singles; MusicBrainz credits it to Brother Ali and unJUST.

Highlights

  • Chapter 1
  • Ottomans
  • Love & Service
  • Cadillac
  • Howlin' Wolf

Weak Spots

  • Little critical coverage
  • The sample concept can feel like a gimmick

Production

unJUST

Influence

His first full-length in several years.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Rites of Passage was a cassette-only release produced by Ali himself, with very small original circulation; Rhymesayers reissued it after his later albums took off. The voice and confidence are already there, but the beats are rough and the writing is still forming.

Context

Released April 28, 2000 on Rhymesayers Entertainment as a cassette.

Highlights

  • Whatever
  • Think It Through
  • Eye of the Storm
  • Voices in My Head
  • Three Day Journey

Weak Spots

  • Thin, homemade production
  • Mainly of historical interest

Production

Brother Ali

Influence

Got him in the door at Rhymesayers.

Replay Value

Low — mostly for completists.
