Why it ranks here

Ka's most acclaimed album is also one of his shortest, eleven songs in thirty-three minutes built around its biblical title. He produced most of it, with DJ Preservation, Animoss and Roc Marciano adding beats, and Roc is the only guest. It scored 85 on Metacritic, Pitchfork gave it 8.1 and singled out some of the most striking writing of his career, and AllMusic called it a superb statement piece.

Context

His fifth solo album, released May 1, 2020 on Iron Works and recorded at Virtue & Vice Studios in Brooklyn.

Highlights

  • Every Now and Then
  • Unto the Dust
  • My Brother's Keeper
  • P.R.A.Y.
  • Old Justice

Weak Spots

  • Its density asks for close attention
  • Some beats, like "P.R.A.Y.", are deliberately jagged

Production

Ka · DJ Preservation · Animoss · Roc Marciano

Influence

Placed No. 35 on Pitchfork's 50 best albums of 2020 and also made Spin's mid-year list.

Replay Value

Very high — thirty-three minutes that keep revealing more.

Why it ranks here

Produced entirely by Ka, Honor Killed the Samurai threads samurai lessons through a more domestic story, as critic Tom Hull put it. Pitchfork gave it 8.0 and said it cemented him as a preeminent stylist, with minor-key loops and few drums, while RapReviews gave it 8.5. It runs thirty-six minutes and closes with the death-poem framing of "I Wish (Death Poem)".

Context

Released August 13, 2016 on Iron Works, three years after The Night's Gambit and a year after the Dr. Yen Lo collaboration with Preservation.

Highlights

  • Conflicted
  • Just
  • Mourn at Night
  • Finer Things / Tamahagene
  • I Wish (Death Poem)

Weak Spots

  • Very little variation in tempo
  • The samurai concept is more mood than narrative

Production

Ka

Influence

Appeared on year-end lists from Complex, Crack and Passion of the Weiss and is the clearest single statement of his style.

Replay Value

Very high.

Why it ranks here

Built around chess, The Night's Gambit is the record where critics fully caught on. He produced all of it, bookending each song with samples, and Roc Marciano appears on "Soap Box". Pitchfork gave it 8.0, Spin and RapReviews 9 out of 10, and it made Spin's best albums of 2013 at No. 8.

Context

Released July 13, 2013 on Iron Works, a year and a half after Grief Pedigree.

Highlights

  • You Know It's About
  • Our Father
  • Knighthood
  • 30 Pieces of Silver
  • Soap Box

Weak Spots

  • The murky mix can bury words
  • A couple of tracks blur together

Production

Ka

Influence

Set the template of tightly themed, self-produced albums he followed for the next decade.

Replay Value

High; it rewards repeat listens.

Why it ranks here

A Martyr's Reward turns from metaphor toward memoir, with Ka looking back on family, mistakes and why he still makes music. Beats Per Minute called it the most complete Ka album yet, and Pitchfork gave it 8.3. Navy Blue produces and appears on "We Living / Martyr", Preservation produces "Subtle" and Ka handles the rest.

Context

Released August 13, 2021 on Iron Works, fifteen months after Descendants of Cain.

Highlights

  • Everybody Up
  • I Notice
  • Peace Peace Peace
  • We Living / Martyr
  • Be Grateful

Weak Spots

  • AllMusic found it slightly underbaked by his standards
  • At forty-one minutes it is one of his longer records

Production

Ka · Navy Blue · DJ Preservation

Influence

Made Pitchfork's, Stereogum's and Spin's best albums of 2021, and the Navy Blue collaboration linked him to a newer generation of underground rappers.

Replay Value

High; it rewards repeat listens.

Why it ranks here

Ka's second album is the first to sound fully like him: self-produced, quiet and unsparing about the life he had left behind. Roc Marciano, the only guest, appears on "Iron Age". It lacks the unifying concept of the albums that followed but already shows the delivery and density that defined his career.

Context

Released February 11, 2012 on Iron Works, four years after his debut, and preceded by several music videos.

Highlights

  • Chamber
  • Cold Facts
  • No Downtime
  • Iron Age
  • Up Against Goliath

Weak Spots

  • Less cohesive than the concept albums that followed
  • Lo-fi mixing

Production

Ka

Influence

The album that brought him to the attention of the underground audience that followed every later release.

Replay Value

High; it rewards repeat listens.

Why it ranks here

Ka's last album examines Christianity and its place in Black American life through gospel samples and fourteen short songs. Pitchfork gave it 8.1 and praised how frankly he critiques that connection, and The Needle Drop gave it a 9. It received little attention on release because it was first sold only through his website.

Context

Surprise-released August 19, 2024 as a $20 purchase on his website, then on streaming services on September 19. He died on October 12, 2024, at 52.

Highlights

  • Such Devotion
  • Collection Plate
  • Borrowed Time
  • God Undefeated
  • True Holy Water

Weak Spots

  • Its thematic focus leaves little room for variety
  • Short songs can feel like fragments

Production

Ka

Influence

Now read as his farewell; it appeared on year-end lists from Beats Per Minute, BrooklynVegan and Complex.

Replay Value

High; it rewards repeat listens.

Why it ranks here

Released the same day as Woeful Studies, Languish Arts is the more varied of the pair, with Chuck Strangers on "Unindulged" and Joi and GoneToHeaven on "Still Holding". It keeps his usual focus but adds little that the 2020–2021 albums had not already done, which keeps it below the core run.

Context

Released September 16, 2022 on Iron Works alongside Woeful Studies.

Highlights

  • Full Cobra
  • Ascension
  • Unindulged
  • Still Holding
  • Last Place

Weak Spots

  • Overshadowed by its twin release
  • Few surprises after the previous two albums

Influence

Showed he was still recording at a steady pace; it was his last release for two years.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

The second of the two September 2022 albums is the bleaker one, ten songs about hardship with Chuck Strangers on "Counted Out" and Joi on "Building". It is consistent but uniform, and works best heard straight after Languish Arts.

Context

Released September 16, 2022 on Iron Works alongside Languish Arts.

Highlights

  • We Not Innocent
  • I'm Tired
  • Counted Out
  • Building
  • My Only Home

Weak Spots

  • Little variation in mood
  • Easy to lose track of next to its twin

Influence

Mostly heard as one half of the 2022 pair.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Ka has said he made his debut as a personal project for his family rather than a career move, and it sounds like it: long at fifteen tracks and rougher than anything after. It still caught the attention of GZA, who invited him onto his 2008 album Pro Tools, and it named the label every later album came out on.

Context

His first solo album, released in 2008 on Iron Works, more than a decade after he first rapped with Natural Elements.

Highlights

  • D.N.A.
  • Iron Work
  • Hood
  • Sunday to Sunday
  • Patience

Weak Spots

  • Long and unfocused next to his later albums
  • Hard to find and little discussed

Influence

Led to his guest verse on GZA's "Firehouse" and set up Grief Pedigree.

Replay Value

Low to moderate.

Essay

The Complete Picture

Ka's catalog has no real misstep. The 2013–2021 run, from The Night's Gambit to A Martyr's Reward, is as consistent as any in modern rap, and Descendants of Cain is where concept, writing and sound line up most completely. The 2022 twin albums and his final record show he was still refining the approach until the end; he died in October 2024, two months after The Thief Next to Jesus.

Start with Honor Killed the Samurai for the clearest statement of his style, then Descendants of Cain for the peak.
