All The Pharcyde Albums Ranked Best to Worst (2026)

The Pharcyde released four studio albums between 1992 and 2004, and this page ranks all four, from Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde to Humboldt Beginnings. The 2002 EP AMP, the compilation Cydeways: The Best of The Pharcyde and the members' solo records, including Fatlip's and Slimkid3's, are not ranked.

Why it ranks here

Released when gangsta rap ruled the West Coast, Bizarre Ride sounded like nothing else from Los Angeles. J-Swift's lush jazz loops back four rappers who trade verses like friends goofing off in a studio, and Rolling Stone described them as a pack of class clowns. Beneath the jokes is real skill and real vulnerability: "Passin' Me By" is one of the great songs about unrequited love, and "Otha Fish" and "4 Better or 4 Worse" show the same openness. Skits and a few juvenile moments are the only drag.

Context

Released November 24, 1992 on Delicious Vinyl; J-Swift produced 15 of its 16 tracks and later complained that he was not properly credited or paid.

Highlights

  • Passin' Me By
  • 4 Better or 4 Worse
  • Otha Fish
  • Soul Flower (Remix)
  • Return of the B-Boy

Weak Spots

  • Several skits and interludes interrupt the flow
  • Some of the humor has aged poorly

Production

J-Swift · L.A. Jay · Slimkid3

Influence

Peaked at only No. 75 on the Billboard 200, but "Passin' Me By" carried it to a gold certification in 1996, and it is now a fixture of best-album lists for 1990s hip-hop.

Replay Value

Exceptional — funny, warm and endlessly quotable.

Why it ranks here

Labcabincalifornia trades the slapstick of the debut for reflection and atmosphere. A then-unknown Jay Dee, later J Dilla, produced most of it, and his warm, off-kilter drums on "Runnin'" and "Drop" are among his earliest major works. Slimkid3's "She Said" and "Somethin' That Means Somethin'" deepen the mood. Many critics panned it as a sophomore slump on release, but its reputation rose steadily with Dilla's, and today it rivals the debut.

Context

Released November 14, 1995 on Delicious Vinyl and Capitol, the last album by the original four-member lineup.

Highlights

  • Runnin'
  • Drop
  • She Said
  • Somethin' That Means Somethin'
  • Splattitorium

Weak Spots

  • At 65 minutes the second half sags
  • Less immediately fun than Bizarre Ride

Production

Jay Dee · Bootie Brown · Slimkid3 · Diamond D · M-Walk · Fatlip

Influence

Reached No. 37 on the Billboard 200 and No. 17 on the R&B chart; "Runnin'" reached No. 55 on the Hot 100, and the "Drop" video, directed by Spike Jonze and shot in reverse, became famous in its own right.

Replay Value

Very high — the Dilla tracks reward close listening.

Why it ranks here

Without Fatlip, Plain Rap is a quieter, more straightforward album, as the title suggests. "Trust" and "Network", which features Black Thought, are the strongest songs, and Showbiz's beat on "Front Line" is a highlight. Bootie Brown and Slimkid3 handle much of the production competently, but the playful chemistry is mostly gone, and Slimkid3 left the group before the album came out.

Context

Released November 7, 2000 on Delicious Vinyl and Edel America, three years after Fatlip's departure.

Highlights

  • Trust
  • Network
  • Front Line
  • World
  • Misery

Weak Spots

  • Little of the humor or spark of the first two albums
  • Production is pleasant but rarely memorable

Production

Bootie Brown · Slimkid3 · J-Swift · Showbiz

Influence

Peaked at No. 157 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on the Independent Albums chart; mostly remembered as a footnote.

Replay Value

Low to moderate — a few songs stand up.

Why it ranks here

By Humboldt Beginnings only Imani and Bootie Brown remained, and the album is a long, loose collection built heavily around cannabis themes. AllMusic noted the mix of club tracks like "The Uh-Huh" and smooth 1980s-style love songs like "Knew U", and Phoenix New Times praised its crisp production. With 23 tracks, many of them untitled interludes, it rarely holds focus.

Context

Released July 13, 2004 on Chapter One, the group's fourth and most recent studio album.

Highlights

  • Knew U
  • The Uh-Huh
  • Illusions
  • Storm
  • Right B4

Weak Spots

  • Twenty-three tracks, padded with untitled interludes
  • A narrow thematic focus wears thin

Production

The Pharcyde · 88-Keys · Spaceboyboogie X

Influence

Minimal commercial impact, though "Knew U" got a music video and kept the name active on the touring circuit.

Replay Value

Low — for devoted fans.

Essay

The Complete Picture

Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde and Labcabincalifornia are enough to make the Pharcyde one of the essential groups of the 1990s, and the second album's role in introducing Jay Dee to a wider audience gives it a second life in hip-hop history. The later records are honest efforts by a reduced group, but they never recapture the chemistry of the original four.

Start with Bizarre Ride for the energy and humor, go to Labcabincalifornia for the mood and the production, and treat the rest as optional.
