All Big Sean Albums Ranked Best to Worst (2026)

Big Sean has released six studio albums, and this page ranks all six, from Finally Famous (2011) to Better Me Than You (2024), plus his 2012 mixtape Detroit, which many fans still call his best project. His three earlier Finally Famous mixtapes, the collaborative albums Twenty88 (with Jhené Aiko) and Double or Nothing (with Metro Boomin), and the What You Expect EP with Hit-Boy are not ranked.

Why it ranks here

Dark Sky Paradise traded the playfulness of his early records for something moodier and more substantial. "Blessings" with Drake and the E-40-assisted lead single were huge hits, "All Your Fault" pairs him with Kanye West, and "One Man Can Change the World", about losing his grandmother, is the most moving song in his catalog. Pitchfork called it a big leap toward the ideal Big Sean album. Metacritic: 72.

Context

His third studio album, released February 24, 2015 through GOOD Music and Def Jam. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 173,000 units and is certified 2× Platinum.

Highlights

  • Blessings
  • One Man Can Change the World
  • All Your Fault
  • Paradise
  • I Know

Weak Spots

  • A couple of features feel like radio insurance
  • The second half is less striking than the first

Production

Key Wane · DJ Mustard · Kanye West · DJ Dahi · Mike Will Made It · Boi-1da

Influence

Turned him from a hit-single rapper into an album artist and was his first No. 1.

Replay Value

High — it holds up front to back.

Why it ranks here

Released free between his first two albums, Detroit is looser and hungrier than either. "24 Karats of Gold" with J. Cole, "100" with Royce da 5'9" and Kendrick Lamar, and "Higher" show his technical side, while spoken-word stories by Common, Young Jeezy and Snoop Lion frame it as a love letter to the city. Wikipedia notes it was widely hailed as his best work, and it won Best Mixtape at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards.

Context

Released September 5, 2012, a year before Hall of Fame.

Highlights

  • 24 Karats of Gold
  • 100
  • Higher
  • Mula
  • FFOE

Weak Spots

  • Long at over an hour
  • A few features crowd him out

Production

Key Wane · Hit-Boy · Young Chop · Mano · Lex Luger · Don Cannon

Influence

Downloaded close to 700,000 times on its first day, it got a sequel in Detroit 2 (2020); Complex ranked it No. 26 among the best albums of 2012.

Replay Value

High — it holds up front to back.

Why it ranks here

Hall of Fame aimed higher than his debut, with No I.D. and Key Wane building most of it. "First Chain" with Nas and Kid Cudi, "Beware" with Lil Wayne and Jhené Aiko and the reflective "Nothing Is Stopping You" are among his best songs, but the album is weighed down by novelty tracks and its tone shifts. Metacritic: 72.

Context

Released August 27, 2013, it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 72,000 copies and was later certified Gold.

Highlights

  • First Chain
  • Beware
  • Nothing Is Stopping You
  • Fire
  • Ashley

Weak Spots

  • Novelty tracks undercut the serious ones
  • Sixty-one minutes with little flow

Production

No I.D. · Key Wane · Da Internz · Xaphoon Jones

Influence

Sold less than expected, but its No I.D. collaborations pointed toward the darker Dark Sky Paradise.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Finally Famous is a fun introduction: "My Last" with Chris Brown and "Marvin & Chardonnay" with Kanye West and Roscoe Dash were hits, and "Memories (Part II)" with John Legend shows a more reflective side. No I.D. produced much of it, and the hashtag-style punchlines were influential at the time, but the album leans on charm more than depth. Metacritic: 69.

Context

His debut studio album, released June 28, 2011 on GOOD Music and Def Jam after three mixtapes. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 87,000 copies and is certified Platinum.

Highlights

  • My Last
  • Marvin & Chardonnay
  • Memories (Part II)
  • I Do It
  • So Much More

Weak Spots

  • Punchline-heavy writing has dated
  • Few songs go beneath the surface

Production

No I.D. · The Neptunes · Xaphoon Jones · Da Internz · Key Wane

Influence

Established him as GOOD Music's breakout star and a fixture on rap radio.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Detroit 2 revisits the 2012 mixtape's format with spoken stories from Dave Chappelle, Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder, and a long guest list. "Deep Reverence" with the late Nipsey Hussle and "Lucky Me" are strong, and the promotional single "Harder than My Demons" is among his most personal songs, but at over seventy minutes it sprawls. Pitchfork was harsh, while most other reviews were positive. Metacritic: 71.

Context

Released September 4, 2020, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 103,000 units, his third No. 1, and was later certified Gold.

Highlights

  • Deep Reverence
  • Lucky Me
  • Harder than My Demons
  • Why Would I Stop?
  • Wolves

Weak Spots

  • Too long, with features doing much of the work
  • Less focused than the original Detroit

Production

Hit-Boy · Key Wane · Boi-1da · Cool & Dre · DJ Dahi

Influence

His last album on GOOD Music before leaving the label in 2021.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

I Decided. is a concept album built around the idea of rebirth; Sean has said both men on the cover are him, present-day and older. It is short and well produced, and "Bounce Back" and "Moves" were big hits, while "No Favors" with Eminem and "Sacrifices" with Migos add punch. Pitchfork argued that it mistakes the passing of time for growth, and the concept rarely shapes the songs. Metacritic: 67.

Context

Released February 3, 2017 on GOOD Music and Def Jam, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum.

Highlights

  • Bounce Back
  • Moves
  • Jump Out the Window
  • No Favors
  • Sacrifices

Weak Spots

  • The rebirth concept is mostly framing
  • Writing rarely goes deeper than the hooks

Production

Metro Boomin · Amaire Johnson · DJ Mustard · WondaGurl · Key Wane · Hitmaka

Influence

"Bounce Back" became one of the biggest singles of his career.

Replay Value

Moderate — mostly for the singles.

Why it ranks here

His first album after leaving GOOD Music is reflective and therapy-minded, with guests from Thundercat and Syd to Teyana Taylor and Gunna. "Who You Are (Superstar)" and "Precision" show he can still rap, and "Black Void" has an interesting texture, but at 66 minutes the message wears thin. Reviews were mixed, and critics noted shallow writing and a narrow subject range.

Context

Released August 30, 2024 through his FF to Def Entertainment, distributed by Def Jam, after a leak of an unfinished version pushed it back.

Highlights

  • Who You Are (Superstar)
  • Precision
  • Black Void
  • Break the Cycle
  • Iconic

Weak Spots

  • Repetitive self-help themes
  • Too long for its ideas

Production

Big Sean · Key Wane · FnZ · Thundercat · Johan Lenox

Influence

Debuted at No. 25 on the Billboard 200 with an estimated 23,000 units, the lowest start of his career.

Replay Value

Low to moderate.

Essay

The Complete Picture

Big Sean's best work comes when the polish meets something personal: the grief and pressure of Dark Sky Paradise, the hometown pride of Detroit. When he leans on concepts or guest lists, as on I Decided. and Detroit 2, the albums are pleasant but forgettable, and Better Me Than You's self-help focus did not reach many listeners.

Start with Dark Sky Paradise, then Detroit. Hall of Fame is the best of the rest.
