All billy woods Albums Ranked Best to Worst (2026)

This ranking covers twelve billy woods albums: the ten solo albums listed in his Wikipedia discography, from Camouflage (2003) to Golliwog (2025), plus Hiding Places (2019) and Maps (2023), his two full-length collaborations with producer Kenny Segal. His Armand Hammer albums with Elucid have their own page, and Brass (with Moor Mother) and his group records with Super Chron Flight Brothers and the Reavers are not included.

Why it ranks here

Maps is a concept album about life in transit, written mostly on the road, and Kenny Segal's jazz-tinged, globetrotting beats give woods his brightest canvas. NPR called it a master class even for one of rap's greatest penmen, and it scored 90 on Metacritic. The guests — Danny Brown's runaway verse on "Year Zero", Aesop Rock on "Waiting Around", Samuel T. Herring on "FaceTime" — all serve a story that ends back home in New York.

Context

Released May 5, 2023 on Backwoodz Studioz, his second album with Segal after Hiding Places. Woods has estimated he wrote about 70 percent of it while touring after pandemic restrictions lifted.

Highlights

  • FaceTime
  • Year Zero
  • Soft Landing
  • Babylon by Bus
  • As the Crow Flies

Weak Spots

  • Rolling Stone found it less passionate than Aethiopes
  • Lighter in tone, so less bracing than Hiding Places

Production

Kenny Segal

Influence

Named among 2023's best albums by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Consequence (#4) and Exclaim! (#7), and the clearest way into his catalog.

Replay Value

Very high.

Why it ranks here

Produced entirely by Preservation, whose samples skid across eras, countries and cultures in Pitchfork's words, Aethiopes is woods' most ambitious album. The title is an ancient European name for Africans, the cover is Rembrandt's Two Moors, and songs like "Wharves" and "No Hard Feelings" move between colonial history and present-day New York. Boldy James, El-P, Breeze Brewin, Elucid and Quelle Chris all appear without breaking the spell.

Context

Released April 8, 2022 on Backwoodz Studioz, the first of two woods albums that year.

Highlights

  • Asylum
  • No Hard Feelings
  • Wharves
  • Sauvage
  • Heavy Water

Weak Spots

  • Dense with references, and it rarely explains itself
  • Spectrum Culture noted a tonal jolt when the features stop for the final two tracks

Production

Preservation

Influence

Topped Treble's year-end list and placed high at Gorilla vs. Bear (#2), The Ringer (#3) and Stereogum (#5); Metacritic 81.

Replay Value

High, and it keeps revealing details.

Why it ranks here

Golliwog takes its name and cover from the racist caricature doll and builds an album of dread around it, with sixteen producers — the Alchemist, El-P, Kenny Segal, Preservation, Conductor Williams and more — sharing one unsettling mood. It scored 88 on Metacritic, and The Guardian found it heavier than his usual output while still making room for beauty.

Context

Released May 9, 2025 on Backwoodz Studioz with guests including Bruiser Wolf, Despot, Elucid and Cavalier.

Highlights

  • Misery
  • Blk Zmby
  • Lead Paint Test
  • Waterproof Mascara
  • Corinthians

Weak Spots

  • Confrontational and abrasive by design
  • Eighteen tracks is a lot of darkness in one sitting

Production

Kenny Segal · Messiah Musik · The Alchemist · El-P · Preservation

Influence

Too recent to measure, but reviews (Pitchfork 8.7, Clash and Exclaim! 9/10) placed it beside his best work.

Replay Value

Moderate — powerful, but heavy.

Why it ranks here

His first full album with Kenny Segal is tense and abrasive in the best way. Pitchfork compared its edginess to Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein, and The Fader called it his leanest and best record. Twelve tracks, about forty minutes and only three guests (Mothermary, Elucid, Self Jupiter) make it the purest dose of his paranoia and dark humor.

Context

Released March 29, 2019 on Backwoodz Studioz, after Segal had contributed beats to Armand Hammer's Rome and Paraffin.

Highlights

  • Spongebob
  • Checkpoints
  • Spider Hole
  • Crawlspace
  • Speak Gently

Weak Spots

  • Segal's dissonant beats can feel harsh next to Maps

Production

Kenny Segal · Mothermary · Blockhead

Influence

Made year-end lists at Time (#5), Vice (#8), NPR (#9) and Stereogum (#9), widening woods' audience before Maps.

Replay Value

High.

Why it ranks here

Woods made History Will Absolve Me expecting it to be his final release before leaving music. Instead it became an underground cult classic and revived his career. Eighteen tracks deep, with Roc Marciano and Masai Bey on "Body of Work" and Elucid on "Freedman's Bureau" and "Sour Grapes", it is where his dense, sardonic writing first found a wider audience.

Context

Released in 2012 on Backwoodz Studioz, after Super Chron Flight Brothers had split and the label was struggling to turn a profit.

Highlights

  • Body of Work
  • The Man Who Would Be King
  • Freedman's Bureau
  • Crocodile Tears
  • Pompeii

Weak Spots

  • Long and uneven next to his 2020s albums

Influence

A Pitchfork profile of Backwoodz Studioz points to the album and its cult following as the label's turning point.

Replay Value

Moderate to high.

Why it ranks here

Woods' second album of 2022 is produced by Messiah Musik, with woods co-producing "Fever Grass". It began with a strain of cannabis that took him back to an earlier era of New York and grew into an album about faith and belief. Pitchfork called it a sprawling personal history; it is quieter and more disorienting than Aethiopes and rewards repeat listens.

Context

Released September 30, 2022 on Backwoodz Studioz, with guests Elucid, Akai Solo, Fielded and Fat Ray.

Highlights

  • Paraquat
  • Fuchsia & Green
  • Classical Music
  • Schism
  • Magdalene

Weak Spots

  • Sputnikmusic noted that the songs don't diversify much from one another

Production

Messiah Musik

Influence

Made BrooklynVegan's (#26) and Beats Per Minute's (#38) year-end lists, confirming the depth of his 2022 run.

Replay Value

High for fans of hazy, loop-based rap.

Why it ranks here

Released six months after Hiding Places, Terror Management is the less-heralded of woods' two 2019 albums but just as sharp. Mach-Hommy joins on "Windhoek", Pink Siifu and Akai Solo on "Long Grass", and Fielded on three songs. It is less focused than the Segal record, which keeps it a step below.

Context

Released October 4, 2019 on Backwoodz Studioz.

Highlights

  • Windhoek
  • Long Grass
  • Marlow
  • Blood Thinner
  • Western Education Is Forbidden

Weak Spots

  • Eighteen tracks make it harder to absorb than Hiding Places

Production

Blockhead · Messiah Musik · Preservation · Steel Tipped Dove · Willie Green

Influence

Part of the 2019 run that set up his acclaimed 2020s albums.

Replay Value

Moderate to high.

Why it ranks here

Known Unknowns arrived the same year as Armand Hammer's Rome and shares its pointed outlook. "Wonderful" brings in Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman, "Police Came to My Show" and "Superpredator" show his gift for bleak comedy, and Elucid appears twice. It is strong, if long at eighteen tracks.

Context

Released June 9, 2017 on Backwoodz Studioz.

Highlights

  • Wonderful
  • Police Came to My Show
  • Superpredator
  • Tupac Jackets
  • Snake Oil

Weak Spots

  • Eighteen tracks, with some sag in the back half

Influence

Bridges History Will Absolve Me and his late-2010s breakthrough.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

With twenty-four tracks, Today, I Wrote Nothing is the longest album on this list, and it plays like a notebook of sketches — some brilliant, some fragments. Elucid appears on five songs, a sign of how central that partnership was becoming.

Context

Released March 31, 2015 on Backwoodz Studioz.

Highlights

  • Lost Blocks
  • Zulu Tolstoy
  • Poor Company
  • Carpetbagger
  • Borrowed Time

Weak Spots

  • Too long to hold its shape

Influence

Captures the restless volume of his mid-2010s output.

Replay Value

Moderate — best in pieces.

Why it ranks here

Entirely produced by Blockhead, Dour Candy is the most sonically unified of his early albums. It is tighter than History Will Absolve Me at fifteen tracks, with Aesop Rock and Elucid on "Tumbleweed" and Open Mike Eagle on "Fool's Gold".

Context

Released in 2013 on Backwoodz Studioz, the same year woods and Elucid launched Armand Hammer.

Highlights

  • Tumbleweed
  • Gilgamesh
  • Redacted
  • The Undercard
  • Cuito Cuanavale

Weak Spots

  • Overshadowed by the album before it
  • The beats are steady rather than surprising

Production

Blockhead

Influence

Blockhead later contributed to Hiding Places.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

His second album keeps him close to the Cannibal Ox circle: Vast Aire appears on "Drinks" and Vordul Mega on "Pit and Pendelum" and "Last MC's". The voice is recognizable, but the writing has not yet reached the precision of his later work.

Context

Released in 2004 on Backwoodz Studioz, in the years when most of his output came through Super Chron Flight Brothers.

Highlights

  • Drinks
  • Mind Control
  • High Treason
  • Last MC's

Weak Spots

  • Twenty-one tracks with little editing

Influence

Mostly of historical interest.

Replay Value

Low to moderate.

Why it ranks here

His debut was made when he was a protégé of Cannibal Ox's Vordul Mega, who appears on five of its twenty tracks. It is the sound of a young writer finding his footing.

Context

Released through Backwoodz Studioz, the label woods founded in 2002 and first ran on his own.

Highlights

  • Minimalism
  • The Things They Carried
  • Poli-Sci
  • Dirge

Weak Spots

  • Raw and unformed next to everything that followed

Influence

The first chapter for a label that later signed Elucid and grew far beyond one man.

Replay Value

Low — for completists.

Essay

The Complete Picture

billy woods' best work comes from close partnerships with a single producer: Kenny Segal on Hiding Places and Maps, Preservation on Aethiopes, Messiah Musik on Church. The early albums are for completists, but everything from History Will Absolve Me onward is worth hearing.

Start with Maps, the most open and accessible record, then go to Aethiopes for his most ambitious writing and Hiding Places for his most intense.
