All CunninLynguists Albums Ranked Best to Worst (2026)

CunninLynguists have released six full-length studio albums, and this page ranks all six, from Will Rap for Food (2001) to Rose Azura Njano (2017). Some discographies also list The Heartstring Theory (Part One) (2024) and (Part Two) (2025) as studio albums, but each is a four-song release that MusicBrainz classifies as an EP, so they are left out, along with the Sloppy Seconds and Strange Journey mixtapes and the 2017 Rose and Azura EPs.

Club called it vast and ambitious, and IGN gave it 9 out of 10.

Why it ranks here

With Mr. SOS joining Deacon and Kno, the second album is sharper and better produced than the debut, with Kno handling most beats and Domingo, RJD2 and Freshchest Prose contributing one each. "Seasons" with Masta Ace, which maps hip-hop's history onto the seasons, became the group's best-known song. Pitchfork gave it 7.4, Spin an A-minus and RapReviews 9 out of 10.

Why it ranks here

Their first album in six years arrived after the Rose and Azura EPs and gathers that material into a longer statement, with Kno producing most of it and Deacon the Villain producing two tracks. Guests are few (Jason Coffey, Trizz and Farah Elle), and the mood is more reflective and soul-leaning than the concept records. It drew far less coverage than their 2000s albums.

Released October 6, 2017 on the group's A Piece of Strange Music label; "Oh Honey" was the single.

Highlights

  • Red, White & Blues
  • Riot!

Weak Spots

  • Little critical coverage
  • Lacks the urgency of their best work

Production

Kno · Deacon the Villain

Influence

Their last full-length release so far, followed only by the short Heartstring Theory releases.

Replay Value

Moderate.

Why it ranks here

Recorded when the group was only Deacon the Villain and Kno, Will Rap for Food is mostly produced by Kno, with Celph Titled producing "So Live!" and Deacon producing "616 Rewind". Pitchfork called it a solid, accessible debut with consistent production, and RapReviews gave it 8.5, but the writing and themes were still finding their shape.

Essay

The Complete Picture

A Piece of Strange is the clear peak and one of the defining Southern underground albums of the 2000s. Dirty Acres, Oneirology and SouthernUnderground form a strong second tier, each with its own angle on the group's sound. Rose Azura Njano and the debut are worth hearing once the core records are familiar.

Start with A Piece of Strange, then Dirty Acres, and treat Oneirology as the late-career highlight.
