All Jurassic 5 Albums Ranked Best to Worst (2026)

Jurassic 5 released four studio albums between 1998 and 2006, and this page ranks all four, from the self-titled debut to Feedback. The 1997 Jurassic 5 EP, which the debut album repackaged with extra tracks, is not ranked separately, and neither are singles such as the 2016 track "Customer Service" or the members' solo work.

Why it ranks here

Quality Control is the album where everything clicks. The title track and "Great Expectations" show off the four-MC routines, "The Influence" and "Jurass Finish First" are built on warm, jazzy loops, and "Swing Set" turns a big-band sample into a playful closer. Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark split the production evenly, and their contrast keeps fifteen tracks moving. It earned a Metacritic score of 77, the group's best.

Context

Released June 6, 2000 on Interscope, the group's first album for a major label after the success of the independent debut.

Highlights

  • Quality Control
  • Great Expectations
  • The Influence
  • Jurass Finish First
  • Swing Set

Weak Spots

  • The positive messaging can feel a little earnest
  • A couple of short interludes add little

Production

Cut Chemist · DJ Nu-Mark · Shafiq Husayn

Influence

Reached No. 43 on the Billboard 200 and No. 23 in the UK, and "Improvise" appeared in localized versions of the video game Jet Set Radio.

Replay Value

Very high — consistent from start to finish.

Why it ranks here

The self-titled debut collects the 1997 EP and a few new tracks into a lean 37-minute record. "Concrete Schoolyard" and "Jayou" are the songs that made the group's name, "Lesson 6: The Lecture" is a Cut Chemist turntable showcase, and "In the Flesh" opens with the four-MC interplay that defined them. It is rawer and slighter than Quality Control, with several short interludes, but it has an energy the later records never quite repeat.

Context

Released June 1, 1998 in the UK on Pan, repackaging the 1997 Jurassic 5 EP with additional tracks; the group signed to Interscope soon after.

Highlights

  • Concrete Schoolyard
  • Jayou
  • In the Flesh
  • Lesson 6: The Lecture
  • Without a Doubt

Weak Spots

  • Short interludes make up much of the running order
  • Thinner production than the Interscope albums

Production

Cut Chemist · DJ Nu-Mark

Influence

Reached No. 70 on the UK albums chart and went gold there; the EP cemented the group's place in the late-1990s alternative scene.

Replay Value

High — brief enough to play straight through.

Why it ranks here

Power in Numbers adds outside producers and guests without losing the core sound. "What's Golden" is one of their best singles, "A Day at the Races" brings in Big Daddy Kane and Percee P for a classic posse cut, and "Freedom" and "Acetate Prophets" keep the turntablism front and center. "Thin Line" with Nelly Furtado is a pleasant crossover attempt. At seventeen tracks it is less focused than Quality Control, though critics still rated it highly, with a Metacritic score of 76.

Context

Released October 8, 2002 on Interscope, with "What's Golden" as the lead single.

Highlights

  • What's Golden
  • A Day at the Races
  • Freedom
  • Thin Line
  • Acetate Prophets

Weak Spots

  • Seventeen tracks dilute the impact
  • The crossover moments feel a touch calculated

Production

Cut Chemist · DJ Nu-Mark · Juju · Sa-Ra Creative Partners

Influence

Their highest-charting album at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 (matched by Feedback), No. 16 in Australia, and certified gold in the UK.

Replay Value

High — the singles are still crowd favorites.

Why it ranks here

Feedback is the only album the group made as a quintet, after Cut Chemist left, and his absence is audible. Outside producers such as Salaam Remi, Scott Storch and Exile push the sound toward radio, and "Work It Out" with Dave Matthews is an odd pairing. There are good moments, notably "Back 4 U", "Gotta Understand" and "Where We At" with Mos Def, but critics were mixed, with a Metacritic score of 57.

Context

Released July 25, 2006 on Interscope; the group split the following year, citing musical differences, before reuniting with Cut Chemist in 2013.

Highlights

  • Back 4 U
  • Where We At
  • Gotta Understand
  • Red Hot
  • Future Sound

Weak Spots

  • Without Cut Chemist the beats lose their character
  • Crossover features feel forced

Production

DJ Nu-Mark · Salaam Remi · Scott Storch · Exile · Bean One

Influence

Matched Power in Numbers at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 6 on the rap chart, but it is the least regarded record in their catalog.

Replay Value

Moderate — a few tracks earn a place in playlists.

Essay

The Complete Picture

At their best, Jurassic 5 made positive, technically sharp rap that sounded like a block party from 1982 rebuilt with late-1990s precision. Quality Control and the debut are the essential records, Power in Numbers is a strong if busier follow-up, and Feedback shows the strain of losing a key producer.

Start with Quality Control, then go back to the debut for the rawest version of the sound.
