Why it ranks here

Made with the Notorious B.I.G. as mentor and executive producer, Hard Core paired Kim's sharp, explicit and funny rapping with polished New York production from Puff Daddy, Stevie J, Ski and Jermaine Dupri. "No Time" with Puff Daddy reached No. 18 on the Hot 100, "Crush on You" followed as a single, and the remix of "Not Tonight" reached No. 6 on the Hot 100. Critics hailed it, and it is now regarded as a classic of 1990s East Coast rap.

Context

Released November 12, 1996 through Undeas, Big Beat and Atlantic. It debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum. Jay-Z and Lil' Cease are among the guests.

Highlights

  • No Time
  • Crush on You
  • Big Momma Thang
  • Spend a Little Doe
  • Not Tonight

Weak Spots

  • Skits break up the momentum
  • Some guest-heavy tracks dilute her voice

Production

Sean Combs · Stevie J · Ski · Jermaine Dupri · Stretch Armstrong

Influence

Set a template for the confident, explicit female rap star that artists from Nicki Minaj onward have built on.

Replay Value

Very high.

Why it ranks here

Kim's second album was her first after the death of the Notorious B.I.G., and it is glossier and more pop-facing than Hard Core, with Mario "Yellowman" Winans handling much of the production, Puffy among the producers and an early Kanye West production. "Notorious KIM" features uncredited vocals from Biggie, and the album balances tributes with club records. Critics were mixed to positive.

Context

Released June 27, 2000 through Queen Bee, Undeas and Atlantic. It debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with about 229,000 copies, her best start, topped the R&B/hip-hop albums chart and was certified platinum.

Highlights

  • No Matter What They Say
  • Custom Made (Give It to You)
  • Notorious KIM
  • Single Black Female
  • Revolution

Weak Spots

  • Long at eighteen tracks
  • The singles underperformed for the album's profile

Production

Sean "Puffy" Combs · Mario "Yellowman" Winans · Rockwilder · Shaft · Kanye West

Influence

Confirmed Kim as a solo star after Biggie and set up her pop crossover with "Lady Marmalade" in 2001.

Replay Value

Good, best in selections.

Why it ranks here

The Naked Truth leans away from the Bad Boy gloss toward tougher, more personal material, with Scott Storch's "Lighters Up", a hard look at life in parts of Brooklyn, as its lead single. It remains the only album by a female rapper rated five mics by The Source. Other critics were cooler: AllMusic gave it two stars, and its Metacritic score is 66.

Context

Released September 27, 2005 through Queen Bee and Atlantic, the same week she began a year-long prison sentence for perjury. It debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200; "Lighters Up" reached No. 31 on the Hot 100.

Highlights

  • Lighters Up
  • Spell Check
  • Whoa
  • Quiet
  • Last Day

Weak Spots

  • Skits clutter the sequence
  • Several tracks feel underdeveloped

Production

Scott Storch · J.R. Rotem · Mr. Porter · Red Spyda · Fredwreck

Influence

Its five-mic rating made it a landmark in hip-hop press history.

Replay Value

Moderate to good.

Why it ranks here

La Bella Mafia brought in a heavyweight producer roster, from Timbaland and Swizz Beatz to Scott Storch, Havoc and Kanye West. Timbaland's "The Jump Off" is one of her best singles, and Rolling Stone felt she sounded more engaged than she had in years. Many critics, though, found it overlong and padded with filler. Metacritic: 65.

Context

Released March 4, 2003 through Queen Bee and Atlantic. It debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum.

Highlights

  • The Jump Off
  • Hold It Now
  • (When Kim Say) Can You Hear Me Now?
  • Came Back for You
  • Heavenly Father

Weak Spots

  • Too long, with obvious filler
  • Feels assembled from different sessions

Production

Timbaland · Swizz Beatz · Scott Storch · Havoc · Kanye West

Influence

Kept her in the commercial conversation in the early 2000s.

Replay Value

Moderate — the singles hold up best.

Why it ranks here

Kim's first studio album in fourteen years is short and modern-sounding, with trap-leaning production from 808 Mafia and others. She has said the title is a deeply personal number for her, tied to her daughter's birthday and Biggie's death. The album arrived after several delays and made little impact, and it lacks the personality of her early work.

Context

Released October 11, 2019 through Queen Bee and eOne after its release date was pushed back from May. "Go Awff" was the lead single.

Highlights

  • Go Awff
  • Pray for Me
  • Found You
  • Catch My Wave
  • Jet Fuel

Weak Spots

  • Generic production for an artist this distinctive
  • Feels slight at about half an hour

Production

808 Mafia · Xtassy · Jonny Chash

Influence

Minimal; a footnote to a catalog defined by its first two albums.

Replay Value

Low — mostly for completists.
