Why it ranks here

Supa Dupa Fly is the album where Missy and Timbaland rewrote the rules. The beats are sparse, syncopated and full of odd sounds, and Missy floats over them as both rapper and singer. "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", built on an Ann Peebles sample, is one of the defining singles of the decade, and "Sock It 2 Me" and "Beep Me 911" are just as inventive.

Context

Released July 15, 1997 by The Goldmind and Elektra. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, was certified platinum and earned two Grammy nominations.

Highlights

  • The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)
  • Sock It 2 Me
  • Beep Me 911
  • Hit Em wit da Hee
  • Izzy Izzy Ahh

Weak Spots

  • Some interludes slow the momentum

Production

Timbaland · Missy Elliott

Influence

Its sound shaped late-1990s R&B and rap, and it regularly appears on lists of the greatest debut albums.

Replay Value

Exceptional — still sounds unlike anything else.

Why it ranks here

Under Construction looks back to the hip-hop Missy grew up on, with nods to 1980s electro and block-party rap, and turns it into her most accessible album. "Work It", with its reversed vocal hook, is one of the most famous singles of the 2000s, and "Gossip Folks" and "Back in the Day" with Jay-Z are just as sharp. It is warm, funny and tightly made.

Context

Released November 12, 2002. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 259,000 copies, was certified double platinum and was nominated for Album of the Year. Missy dedicated it to Aaliyah.

Highlights

  • Work It
  • Gossip Folks
  • Back in the Day
  • Funky Fresh Dressed
  • Bring the Pain

Weak Spots

  • A couple of R&B tracks feel slight

Production

Timbaland · Missy Elliott · Craig Brockman · Nisan Stewart

Influence

Brought old-school hip-hop references back into the pop mainstream.

Replay Value

Very high, front to back.

Why it ranks here

This is Missy and Timbaland at their most adventurous. "Get Ur Freak On", with its tumbi riff and tabla rhythm, is one of the most imitated beats of its era, and "One Minute Man" and "4 My People" pushed into dance music. The second half is weaker, but the high points are among the best things either of them made.

Context

Released May 15, 2001. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 250,000 copies and was certified platinum. "Get Ur Freak On" and "Scream a.k.a. Itchin'" both won Grammy Awards.

Highlights

  • Get Ur Freak On
  • One Minute Man
  • 4 My People
  • Lick Shots
  • Scream a.k.a. Itchin'

Weak Spots

  • The slow songs on the back half lose momentum

Production

Timbaland · Missy Elliott · Craig Brockman · Nisan Stewart

Influence

"Get Ur Freak On" helped bring South Asian sounds into mainstream American pop and rap.

Replay Value

Very high for the first half.

Why it ranks here

The Cookbook is the first Missy album where Timbaland is not the main producer, and she handles the shift well. "Lose Control" with Ciara and Fatman Scoop is a high-energy hit, the Neptunes and Rich Harrison bring new textures, and "Teary Eyed" shows her range as a singer. It is less cohesive than her peak, but it is fun throughout.

Context

Released July 4, 2005 by The Goldmind and Atlantic. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum and was nominated for Best Rap Album.

Highlights

  • Lose Control
  • Teary Eyed
  • We Run This
  • Joy
  • On & On

Weak Spots

  • Less sonic unity than the Timbaland albums
  • Slightly overlong

Production

The Neptunes · Rich Harrison · Scott Storch · Timbaland · Missy Elliott

Influence

Her last studio album to date; "Lose Control" remains one of her signature songs.

Replay Value

High, start to finish.

Why it ranks here

Da Real World is moodier and more aggressive than the debut, with Missy rapping harder over Timbaland's colder beats. "All n My Grill" and "Hot Boyz" were hits, "Beat Biters" takes aim at copycats, and guests including Eminem, Beyoncé, Aaliyah, Big Boi and Redman show how central she had become. It is less joyful than her best records.

Context

Released June 22, 1999 by The Goldmind and Elektra. It debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200.

Highlights

  • All n My Grill
  • Hot Boyz
  • Beat Biters
  • Dangerous Mouths
  • Smooth Chick

Weak Spots

  • Heavier mood makes it less fun
  • Too many guests on some tracks

Production

Timbaland

Influence

The "Hot Boyz" remix became one of the biggest rap singles of 1999 and 2000.

Replay Value

Good, with a few skips.

Why it ranks here

Released barely a year after Under Construction, This Is Not a Test! sounds like a sequel made at speed. "Pass That Dutch" is a classic Missy single and "I'm Really Hot" has a great Timbaland beat, but the album leans on formula and lacks the surprises of her earlier work.

Context

Released November 25, 2003. It debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 with 143,600 copies and was certified platinum.

Highlights

  • Pass That Dutch
  • I'm Really Hot
  • Wake Up
  • Keep It Movin'
  • Let It Bump

Weak Spots

  • Feels rushed
  • Fewer new ideas than its predecessors

Production

Timbaland · Missy Elliott · Craig Brockman · Nisan Stewart

Influence

Limited compared with her earlier albums.

Replay Value

Moderate — the singles carry it.

Essay

The Complete Picture

Missy Elliott's catalog is short and remarkably consistent. Supa Dupa Fly introduced a new sound, Miss E... So Addictive and Under Construction refined it into blockbuster form, and The Cookbook showed she could thrive beyond Timbaland. Even the weakest album here, This Is Not a Test!, has singles most artists would build a career on.

Start with Supa Dupa Fly, then go straight to Under Construction.
