All Freddie Gibbs Albums Ranked Best to Worst (2026)

Freddie Gibbs has released five solo studio albums, and this page ranks all five, from ESGN (2013) to You Only Die 1nce (2024), plus the three collaborative albums he is best known for: Piñata (2014) and Bandana (2019) with Madlib, and Alfredo (2020) with the Alchemist — eight records in all. His other collaborations, Fetti (with Currensy and the Alchemist, 2018) and Alfredo 2 (2025), his many mixtapes including the 2018 commercial tape Freddie, and his EPs are not ranked.

Why it ranks here

Gibbs's street-level gangsta rap over Madlib's crate-digging soul loops looked like a mismatch on paper; on record it sounds inevitable. Built over three years and preceded by the Thuggin', Shame and Deeper EPs, Piñata is entirely produced by Madlib and stacked with guests — Raekwon, Scarface, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Ab-Soul, Domo Genesis and Mac Miller. It scored 82 on Metacritic, and Pitchfork argued that the duo's shared uncompromising streak erased any audience divide.

Context

His first collaborative album with Madlib, released March 18, 2014 on Madlib Invazion. It debuted at No. 39 on the Billboard 200, his first entry on the chart.

Highlights

  • Thuggin'
  • Harold's
  • Knicks
  • Deeper
  • Real

Weak Spots

  • Seventeen tracks and an hour long
  • Consequence felt it drags a little in the final stretch

Production

Madlib

Influence

Turned Gibbs from a respected mixtape rapper into an underground headliner and made producer-and-rapper albums fashionable again.

Replay Value

Very high — Madlib's loops never wear out.

Why it ranks here

Five years later, the second Madlib album is tighter — fifteen tracks, 46 minutes — and more reflective. Gibbs said he wrote most of it while expecting a long prison sentence, and the lyrics swing between cynicism and empathy. Pusha T and Killer Mike on "Palmolive", Anderson .Paak on "Giannis" and Yasiin Bey and Black Thought on "Education" are standouts. It scored 88 on Metacritic, tied with Alfredo for the best in his catalog, and landed on many 2019 year-end lists.

Context

Released June 28, 2019 through ESGN, Keep Cool, Madlib Invazion and RCA, and debuted at No. 21 on the Billboard 200.

Highlights

  • Crime Pays
  • Palmolive
  • Giannis
  • Education
  • Fake Names

Weak Spots

  • A few beat switches feel abrupt
  • Lacks the first album's sense of discovery

Production

Madlib

Influence

Confirmed MadGibbs as one of the defining rapper-producer duos of the era.

Replay Value

Very high — tight enough to play front to back.

Why it ranks here

Alfredo is the smoothest record Gibbs has made: ten tracks over the Alchemist's soft, sample-heavy loops, with Rick Ross, Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine and Tyler, the Creator dropping by. Pitchfork noted how easily he glides in and out of the pocket. It scored 88 on Metacritic, appeared on many best-of-2020 lists and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.

Context

Released May 29, 2020 through ESGN, ALC and Empire. It debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 with 30,000 units, at the time the highest peak for both artists.

Highlights

  • 1985
  • God Is Perfect
  • Scottie Beam
  • Something to Rap About
  • Frank Lucas

Weak Spots

  • Mellow enough that a few tracks blend together
  • Less variety than the Madlib records

Production

The Alchemist

Influence

Helped define the Alchemist's 2020s run and led to the 2025 sequel, Alfredo 2.

Replay Value

Very high — short enough to loop.

Why it ranks here

His first album on a major label is framed around the fictional $$$ Resort and Casino, and its production is the most varied in his catalog: the Alchemist, Madlib, Kaytranada, James Blake, DJ Dahi and Boi-1da all contribute. Guests include Pusha T, Raekwon, Anderson .Paak, Scarface and Rick Ross. Critics heard dark, vulnerable writing under the lavish surface; it scored 78 on Metacritic and peaked at No. 11, his highest chart position.

Context

His fourth solo studio album, released September 30, 2022 through ESGN and Warner Records.

Highlights

  • Couldn't Be Done
  • Too Much
  • Pain & Strife
  • Gold Rings
  • Dark Hearted

Weak Spots

  • HipHopDX found the casino skits the most jarring part
  • So many producers that it lacks a single identity

Production

The Alchemist · Madlib · Kaytranada · James Blake · DJ Dahi · Boi-1da

Influence

Showed Gibbs could scale up to a major-label release without losing his edge.

Replay Value

High — the best-sequenced solo album he has made.

Why it ranks here

Coming off Piñata, Gibbs went wide: Blair Norf, Boi-1da, Frank Dukes, Kaytranada, Murda Beatz and Mike Dean, with Black Thought on "Extradite" and Gucci Mane and E-40 on "10 Times". Consequence heard a restless artist who keeps finding new sounds. It scored 78 on Metacritic and was his first solo album to reach the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 76.

Context

His second solo studio album, released November 20, 2015 through ESGN and Empire.

Highlights

  • Rearview
  • Extradite
  • Lately
  • Narcos
  • Insecurities

Weak Spots

  • The stylistic range makes it feel unfocused
  • A few trap-leaning tracks are generic

Production

Blair Norf · Boi-1da · Frank Dukes · Kaytranada · Mike Dean · Speakerbomb

Influence

Proved he could work outside the Madlib frame on contemporary beats.

Replay Value

Medium to high.

Why it ranks here

Made after his 2016 arrest in France and acquittal in Austria, You Only Live 2wice is a 32-minute record about resurrection, with no guests at all. Pitchfork praised his vocal command, which shifts between intensity and vulnerability. Kaytranada and BADBADNOTGOOD's "Alexys" and the closer "Homesick" are highlights. It scored 76 on Metacritic.

Context

His third solo studio album, released March 31, 2017 through ESGN and Empire.

Highlights

  • 20 Karat Jesus
  • Alexys
  • Crushed Glass
  • Dear Maria
  • Homesick

Weak Spots

  • Feels slight next to the producer albums
  • Some beats are standard for the era

Production

Speakerbomb · Pops · Blair Norf · Kaytranada · BADBADNOTGOOD

Influence

Its title and themes returned seven years later on the sequel, You Only Die 1nce.

Replay Value

High — short and focused.

Why it ranks here

His debut studio album doubles as a launch for his ESGN label and crew, with G-Wiz, Hit Skrewface and Big Kill alongside Daz Dillinger, Spice 1 and Jay Rock. The rapping is excellent, but the 19 tracks and 71 minutes dilute it, a point Consequence raised while still praising the record. HipHopDX noted it doesn't introduce a new sound. It scored 73 on Metacritic.

Context

Released June 19, 2013 through ESGN and Empire, after he left Young Jeezy's CTE label.

Highlights

  • The Color Purple
  • Freddie Soprano
  • Have U Seen Her
  • Lose Control
  • Came Up

Weak Spots

  • Bloated at 19 tracks
  • Crew verses don't match his level

Production

Big Jerm · Lifted · Lord Zedd · Superville · Tone Mason

Influence

Established his independent ESGN imprint, which released his work from then on.

Replay Value

Medium — strong verses, uneven beats.

Why it ranks here

Dropped with barely a week of teasing — Freddy Krueger-themed billboards in Los Angeles — You Only Die 1nce is a 13-track, 37-minute sequel to You Only Live 2wice. Pops handles much of the production, with Bnyx, DJ Harrison and 454 contributing. Gibbs sounds as sharp as ever, but the beats are less distinctive than on his best work, and it peaked at No. 105.

Context

His fifth solo studio album, released November 1, 2024 through ESGN and AWAL, with "On the Set" as the only single.

Highlights

  • Status
  • Wolverine
  • Rabbit Island
  • Steel Doors
  • On the Set

Weak Spots

  • Few tracks stand apart from his earlier work
  • Overshadowed by Alfredo 2 a year later

Production

Pops · Lambo · Bnyx · DJ Harrison · 454

Influence

Too new to judge.

Replay Value

Medium — solid but rarely essential.

Essay

The Complete Picture

The ranking splits into two tiers. Piñata, Bandana and Alfredo are among the best rap albums of the last decade, each built on one producer's vision and Gibbs's ability to bend his flow around anything. His solo albums are more scattered, with lots of producers and guests, but Soul Sold Separately and Shadow of a Doubt show he can carry a varied, big-budget record on his own.

Start with Piñata, then Alfredo for something shorter and smoother, and Bandana for the most complete version of the Madlib partnership. On the solo side, begin with Soul Sold Separately.
